Script

Good morning. My mother always told me that if I knew who I was, I’d be just fine. A pithy soundbite like that may sound amazing, but I didn’t understand what ‘knowing myself’ actually meant. Or, for that matter, how I could achieve it.

Finding out who we truly are is a quest many of us embark on; some struggle, some don’t. For me, it’s always been a concept I’ve found hard to get to grips with. Many of my friends have gone travelling around the world to ‘find themselves’. Perhaps there’s a secret undercover location somewhere in Thailand that stores the real versions of ourselves, just waiting to be discovered by Western gap-year travellers.

If you’re trying to find yourself, don’t worry. Though others may  have a perception of our limitations and label us however they wish, the Bible encourages  us to have an attitude of freedom. God didn’t create us to be limited by the expectations of others. He created us out of his great love, to enjoy all that he is and all he has done.

I don’t know any human who knows the complete mind of God, which must mean that there are some things that God has planned for us that people who put us in boxes may not know about. It’s not that we are not able to do all those things within these boxes, but it is much more impactful if we act with the freedom that is readily available to us through Jesus.

Father, thank you that we’re still alive and breathing today. Please give us wisdom and direction so that we can feel purposeful here on earth. Allow us to impact the world around us in positive ways, and find our true selves so that we can live in total freedom. Amen.
