Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Father Brian D鈥橝rcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:聽
Today is a holiday in Ireland because we鈥檙e celebrating St Patrick鈥檚 weekend. After the noise of brass bands, parades and outlandish costumes, I鈥檓 looking forward to a quiet day because 鈥淣othing in all creation is so like God as stillness鈥 (Meister Eckhart). Years ago when I worked in a busy Dublin parish I always tried to offer a few positive thoughts on Sunday to help busy people through the week.聽
One Sunday I noticed a woman three seats from the front, her head bobbing and she fast asleep. For the next three Sundays she sat in the same seat; and every time I went to the microphone, off to sleep she popped. During the week I dropped into her home to find out why she found me so boring.聽When the front door opened, the noise from the kitchen was deafening. Five children flew in every direction; schoolbags smashed off the bathroom door, two young boys wrestled on the sofa. I wanted to turn and run away.
The mother apologised for the noise and before I said a word she blurted out-: 鈥淚鈥檓 sorry for sleeping during your sermons Brian; it鈥檚 not out of rudeness. But Sunday is the only quiet time I get. I can鈥檛 help drifting off,鈥 she explained. I shook her hand and assured her she was always welcome in our Church. 鈥淧lease come鈥, I said. 鈥淒on鈥檛 even attempt to stay awake. God is thrilled you鈥檙e getting a rest.鈥 Recently I was leading a reflection day for young mums. They were telling me how frustrated they felt because there is no quiet time in their day.聽
One unsympathetic woman told them to get up half an hour earlier if they wanted to pray. 鈥淵ou can sleep when you鈥檙e dead,鈥 she snapped. A young mother quietly disagreed. 鈥淲ell If I鈥檓 to care for my children properly I need more sleep not less. For me sleep is life. I don鈥檛 think God needs me to talk with him in the wee small hours. I鈥檒l honour God by enjoying my sleep because I鈥檒l have plenty of quiet time with Him when I鈥檓 dead.鈥 Both women have a point. If we really value time to reflect, we鈥檒l make time for it. And looking after our health is as close to God鈥檚 heart as praying is.
