Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Sheridan Voysey, Writer and broadcaster:
Given the choice, I’ll take an obscure arthouse film about the Frenchman trying to ‘find himself’ over the big-budget Blockbuster most of the time. I’ll choose a documentary over Big Bang Theory, and an art gallery visit over a football game. So, as you can tell, pondering big ideas and other such navel-gazing is something of a personality trait. But I think there are some questions most of us ponder at some stage, however we’re wired. Lately, I’ve come to reassess two of them. Who am I? What am I here for?
I used to think these two great human questions could be answered once then put aside—as we pursued our passions and followed what we did well, we would discover what we were meant to do with our lives then spend the rest of our days doing it. Now I’m not so sure. When the company folds, the accident happens, the kids leave home, or our plans just don’t work out, I reckon we can find ourselves asking those questions all over again. One autumn morning not too long ago I took a window seat at a cafe and opened my journal.
Feeling directionless, I wanted to craft a statement that reminded me of what mattered most in life, something to guide me forward. After much scribbling and crossing out, here’s a little of what I wrote: The hand that spins the galaxies brought me into being. The One who holds the stars has made me his own. I am a pilgrim in this world, in search of wisdom and wonder. I will take new adventures. And walk confidently into the unknown.
I will aim for great things, but always remember: That what I achieve is not as important as the person I become. The path is long and the terrain at times hard. Still: I will not wish for another’s life. I will take my place, play my part. For the hand that spins the galaxies wants me here. That morning I discovered that when all seems shaky and uncertain, answers to the big questions can guide me forward. I think who we are and why we’re here are two of the biggest—worth answering afresh, however we’re wired.
