Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From comedian & writer Paul Kerensa:

Unbelievably, it’s only the 10th day of Christmas. The lords might be a-leaping, but most of us are jumping to pack away the festive season. We’ve decked the halls, it’s nearly time to haul the decs, down from the tree, back to the loft.

The panto outing might be behind you. Other annual trips too: the drop-in on the neighbours, a rare visit to extended family, or customary hellos at the church carol service.

We tell ourselves we’ll revisit soon. We’ll see the grandparents soon. Pop by the neighbours to borrow some garden equipment. Maybe we’ll swing by church at Easter, and there’ll always be weddings, or funerals.

But leaving such visits to chance? To the need of a leaf-blower, or unexpected nuptials? Some places can be tricky to return to, when it’s been a while. I know I need encouragement over some thresholds.

A few New Years ago, I joined a gym. Once my attendance dropped, returning became awkward. Don’t be a stranger, I told myself, too late.

Years before the gym, I stopped going to church for a while too. No reason. Life just got in the way. I was working weekends, then birthdays and illness filled the time, then I just forgot. It became easier to keep on not going.

I came back to church, hearing about the Prodigal Son – who’s welcomed back with open arms, no matter how long he’d been away. We don’t have to be churchgoers to get this parable: we all resist returning to places, to people, because it’s been too long. Time can make us feel unwelcome, yet actually us prodigal returners can be welcomed back like we never went away.

Some seasonal visits might have opened old wounds – whether to family homes, places of worship, neighbours or gyms, marred by division or disagreement, unforgiven, unforgotten. But if any bridges were built, if any healing happened... well next Christmas can be a long time till we come back.

Decorations might be packed away for 11 months. But my plans to return to those places won’t get packed away with them. Extended family, alienated friends, any rekindled connections may have just scratched the surface this winter, and frosty relationships can take time to thaw.

Spring’s coming. So let’s revisit soon. I won’t need to borrow a leaf-blower for a long time.
