Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Harvey Belovski, rabbi at Golders Green United Synagogue:

Christmas, Chanukah and Hogmanay are all behind us. But for many, especially working parents, the big day is today, as virtually every school in the UK resumes. Although my youngest son has asked me to mention his school on the radio for making him return last Thursday!

Today also marks 137 years since the birth of the Lebanese-American poet Khalil Gibran. Gibran’s most famous work – The Prophet – is extraordinary – he manages to touch on every-day, ordinary experiences, while retaining a fable-like, otherworldly feel. Gibran advises us about simple pleasures such as love, beauty and friendship, while offering the most profound insights. I’ve heard him quoted at Jewish weddings, funerals and bar mitzvahs, and friends of other faiths tell me that he often appears at their life-cycle events. Here’s a sample that’s popular at weddings:

You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore.

You shall be together when white wings of death scatter your days.

But after this paean to attachment, Gibran reminds his reader that there need to be what he calls ‘spaces in your togetherness’. I love this, as the importance of allowing each other space to grow separately within a loving relationship is often overlooked. For the Prophet, this balance allows ‘the winds of heaven’ to dance between a loving couple – what a lovely image.

Gibran also offers a wonderful insight into how those of us fortunate enough to have children relate to them as they grow into adults. He reminds us that:

Your children are not your children.

They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.

They come through you but not from you,

And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

In a few profound words, Gibran touches on the dilemma of parenting: loving and nurturing children while preparing them for life as independent, resilient adults. He sees parents as archers who are determined that their arrows – children – will travel swift and far.

On Gibran’s birthday, as our children go back to school, I believe that there is much to learn from these beautiful words. We all want the best for our children, to protect them from hurt and trouble. But it can be difficult to let go. I hope we can remember that the goal is to shoot the arrow swift and far.
