Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Writer and Musician, Jahnavi Harrison:

I've had a lot of Januarys. Thirty-two to be precise. The familiar timeline's been well trodden. First, the promising shimmer of New Year's resolutions - just there on the horizon; everything I've ever wanted to be, within the short walk from December 31st to January 1st. There are the first days, all fresh air and 'Hello, new world!' And the days that follow that - little cheats, little sneaks...wilting willpower... And then, the inevitable slide back toward the murky pond of how-it's-always-been.

That said, naturally over the years I've bought less and less into the idea that the fireworks at midnight are heralding in a new me. Perhaps it also comes with age. The faster a year seems to pass, the less dividing things up by 365 days feels meaningful in that way. A few years ago I changed my approach and started naming my year with a theme.

2018 had two: Let Go and 'I will not complain'. 2019 was about not wasting time - Fill the Gaps with Gold. For 2020 I've gone full minimalism with only one word - Brave.

I've chosen the word Brave because fear is a familliar visitor to me. Like a Swiss Army knife, Brave unpacks a lot of handy synonyms I need on this perhaps perilous journey of a new decade - courageous, determined, bold, committed, spirited and fearless.

I really loved ice skating when I was young - I had some girly fantasy of being able to do all the triple loop, double Axel stuff - despite the fact that mostly I could never do anything but timidly move around the rink in one direction. I still remember the feeling when my mum would grab my hand and we'd skate together, picking up speed. I felt like a bird rising on a warm wind. I'd dig my skates in more boldly and hold one arm in the air - it felt like flying!

聽For me, bravery is inseparable with humility. To say, 'I'm not in control and I don't have it all figured out, but I put my hand in yours my Lord' is brave, and hard.

聽Sound is powerful. Words are powerful. Repetition is powerful. Unlike many resolutions I've made in the past and then predictably broken - this actually helps.
