Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Harvey Belovski, rabbi at Golders Green United Synagogue:

One of the oddest phrases I’ve discovered recently is ‘old new year’.  I’m used to 1st January and the Jewish new year, which falls in the autumn.  But the Julian calendar, still used in Eastern Orthodox Churches, is 13 days behind our calendar, making today, 14th January, the ‘old new year’.  How this came about was the subject of my eldest son’s bar mitzvah speech.

Julius Caesar introduced his calendar just over 2000 years ago.  It worked fairly well, but due to a miscalculation of the length of the solar year by 11 minutes, it fell behind the actual year by a day around every 128 years.  This meant that mid-summer and mid-winter started to move out of alignment with the calendar.  By the 16th century, things had drifted so far that something had to be done.  In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII introduced a corrected calendar – known as the Gregorian – that’s far more accurate.  It was gradually adopted across the world, with Saudi Arabia the most recent sign-up in 2016.

Which leads to a trick question.  What happened on 10th September 1752 in London?  And the answer is: nothing at all!  That’s because when Great Britain went Gregorian, it was necessary to remove 10 days to get things aligned, so the day after Wednesday 2nd September was Thursday 14th September, so 10th didn’t exist!

It’s alleged that people rioted that September, demanding their 11 days back.  Of course, no-one really lost anything when the calendar changed, but I believe that every moment of our lives offers a precious opportunity, one never to be repeated.

There’s a Jewish prayer said only at the holiest time of the year.  We simply ask God – zochrenu lechaim – give us life.  A great rabbi said that ‘life’ really means ‘time’.  But I suppose that asking for more time means justifying what we’re going to do with it.  Only at the holiest times can we really admit that many of us – including me – waste a lot of time.

Shakespeare’s Macbeth says, ‘Let every man be master of his time’.  It’s a tough job to master our time, but just being mindful of the challenge on this ‘old new year’ might be a good way to begin.
