Toraigh: Creag Bheag i Lár na Farraige
Pobal Oileán Thoraà agus a streachailt lena saol ar leith a chaomhnú. The Tory Island community and its fight to preserve a unique way of life.
Is pobal Gaeilge cúpla céad duine é Oileán ThoraÃ, an t-oileán is iargúlta in Éirinn a bhfuil daoine ina gcónaà air. Le 25 bliain anuas, is é Patsy Dan Rodgers rà an oileáin. Tá sé i ndiaidh a fháil amach go bhfuil ailse air. SmaoinÃonn sé siar ar iarrachtaà na n-oileánach a saol a chaomhnú agus a chosaint.
Tá an conradh farantóireachta le hathnuachan - seo an ceangal laethúil le tÃr mór. MothaÃonn an pobal go ndearnadh neamhiontas dÃobh. TosaÃtear feachtas le bád nÃos fearr a fháil. ÉirÃonn cruinnithe pobail teasaÃ. Tagann scoilteanna ón am a chuaigh thart chun tosaigh agus i rith an ama tá sláinte Patsy ag dul in olcas.
Faigheann Patsy bás tobann agus é leis na dochtúirà ar tÃr mór. Tá tórramh mór aige agus tá aird na tÃre ar an oileán arÃs.
Cad é mar a thig leis an an phobal seo ar fhÃorimeall na hÉireann agus na hEorpa, a nósanna beatha ar leith a chaomhnú - rà ann nó as?
Tory Island is a small Irish-speaking community on Ireland's most remote inhabited island. For almost 25 years, Patsy Dan Rodgers has been the king of Tory. Diagnosed with cancer, Patsy reflects on the islanders' efforts to secure their unique way of living.
The ferry contract comes up for renewal – it's the daily link to the mainland. The islanders feel they have been ignored and a campaign to reverse the decision begins. Through it all we see Patsy's health decline, before he passes away quite suddenly while on the mainland for treatment. His funeral takes place and national attention is on the island once more.
How can this community, on the very margins of Ireland and Europe, preserve their unique way of life, with or without a king?
