Dr Tommy Curry
Edi Stark talks to the professor of African philosophy and black male studies at the University of Edinburgh.
In this electrifying interview, Edi Stark talks to Afro American philosopher Dr Tommy Curry, professor of Africa philosophy and black male studies in the philosophy department at the university of Edinburgh. He was born in Louisiana and came to Scotland with his family last year from Texas A & M university where he had quickly become a professor and reset the academic agenda on racial struggle and black masculinity. His most famous, award winning book, The Man Not...contends that as a subject of study, the black male is persona non grata. Despite his historic and daily struggle with racial abuse and evidence dating back to slavery, of him being a traumatised victim of sexual and domestic abuse from men and women, Dr Curry argues that the black man in America is dehumanised as a hyper-sexual perpetrator of rape and violence, when in fact he is a victim of abuse and oppression whose vulnerability is unacknowledged. Such a radical re-frame has won critical acclaim and enemies. As he tells Edi,he shockingly hit the headlines in America when he received numerous death threats from white supremacists but as we鈥檒l hear, he hasn't come to Edinburgh to run away. In the podcast version of this programme, Edi interviews Dr Curry again to ask about his reaction to the police killing of George Floyd in America.
