As Bob Harris celebrates his 50th Anniversary, Greg James talks in depth to the master broadcaster about his life, influences, passions and constant search for the next big thing

Radio 2 celebrates a master craftsman who has established many unique achievements over 50 years on air.

Bob Harris has always built his own personal, melodic and memorable playlists for his radio shows and is loved and respected by his colleagues, world famous musicians and a loyal audience.

Above all, Bob retains a huge commitment to helping new musicians from Emmylou Harris and Tom Petty in the 70s through to Steve Earle, Lady A, Carrie Underwood and Kacey Musgraves in more recent years and today鈥檚 rising stars including The Shires, Ward Thomas, Kelsea Ballerini and Tenille Townes.

The Country Show with Bob Harris continues to be the destination for people wanting to know what鈥檚 happening in the Country Music World, with sessions and plays for new artists like Ruthie Collins, Ingrid Andress (as featured on New To 2 and the main Radio 2 playlist) and Willie Jones (tipped as the next Little Nas X).

The emerging artists Bob Harris continues to champion on air and those big names still working, influencing and cutting through like Queen (who he gave their first on air exposure to) and David Bowie (he sang backing vocals on the Space Oddity album) will be reflected in the playlist of this special programme.

Radio 1 Breakfast presenter Greg James grew up with Bob鈥檚 famous whispering voice coming out of the radios at home, as his father Alan has been a fan from Bob鈥檚 first broadcast on Radio 1 on August 19th 1970 and his television career on The Old Grey Whistle Test, right through to Bob鈥檚 current work on Radio 2. They are firm friends through a love of cricket and music and have often attended gigs together with their families.
