Amol Rajan chats to comedian and author David Baddiel about his brand new children's book 'Future Friend'. This is David鈥檚 first attempt at a sci-fi novel which is described as an adventure that combines action with humour and the importance of friendship. The story revolves around Pip who is propelled forward in time and she befriends a child genius called Rahul who she joined forces with to get her back to her own time. Since becoming a children's author in 2013, David has sold more than 1.3 million books to become one of the UK鈥檚 best selling authors. David created and presented 鈥� with Frank Skinner 鈥� Fantasy Football and Baddiel & Skinner Unplanned, attaining three number one hits alongside The Lightning Seeds with the football anthem Three Lions.

It鈥檚 been a few weeks since my sister gave birth to her new one, and she鈥檚 getting pretty eased in now to being a mother of two.聽 I鈥檝e looked after my 2 year old nephew a fair amount over that time 鈥� probably the most time I鈥檝e spent with a two year old in the last 20 years! It鈥檚 a pretty fascinating time of development 鈥� meaning, sometimes you want to pull your hair out鈥� but 鈥� there鈥檚 so much going on at once! One of the many things I鈥檝e been struck by is his appetite for listening to stories.聽
My sister isn鈥檛 keen on him having screentime at this point, unless all hell is breaking loose, so at all other times 鈥� it鈥檚 audio alone that he gets. If I put on an audiobook for kids, he鈥檒l sit completely still and focused, and can listen for more than an hour. And he鈥檒l remember words and phrases 鈥� he memorises chunks of Peppa and the Mr Men, and repeats them over and over while he鈥檚 playing. This is his time for acquiring language at an incredible rate, so I know it鈥檚 to be expected鈥� but watching him has reminded me of how much I鈥檝e lost that skill of listening without doodling, ironing, cooking or driving. It also made me wonder how well I listen in conversation, then - if that鈥檚 the quality of my attention.聽
Within the Hindu tradition, listening or sravanam is rated as the most important of all activities. And not just listening, but hearing 鈥� digesting the sound and meaning and letting it shape my life. Sound influences thoughts, which lead to actions and choices, which add up, day by day, to make a life. So what I listen to is as important to my health and wellbeing as what I eat. I do want to flex those hearing muscles a bit, inspired by my nephew, so recently if I鈥檓 talking to a friend, or especially listening to something I can learn from, I鈥檓 trying be more conscious of when my attention wanders and to try to refocus it. I鈥檓 also trying to digest what I鈥檝e heard by remembering things later on鈥hough these days鈥� there鈥檚 a lot of Peppa Pig in there too!
