Amol Rajan sits in on Maximum Music Monday

Amol Rajan chats to rugby league legend Kevin Sinfield about the 大象传媒 Two documentary Rob Burrow 鈥 My Year with MND. Plus the tunes keep rolling on a Maximum Music Monday.

Amol Rajan chats to rugby league legend Kevin Sinfield about his close friend and former team mate Rob Burrow, and the 大象传媒 Two documentary Rob Burrow 鈥 My Year with MND. This moving documentary follows Rob Burrow in his fight against motor neurone disease, with his family and friends - including former team mates Kevin and Barrie McDermott - giving their moving insight into this remarkable man. Rob was diagnosed with the degenerative disease, for which there is no cure, just two years after ending his stellar playing career by helping Leeds Rhinos to a record-extending eighth Super League Grand Final in autumn 2017. As the disease takes its toll physically, he speaks of his determination to live as normal a life as possible, and explains how his rugby career has prepared him for the challenge.

Then between 8 am and 9 am, Amol keeps the tunes rolling on Maximum Music Monday.

Along with Tina Daheley on news, Richie Anderson on travel and Mike Williams on sport, he and the team have the best start to your morning. With headlines, tunes chosen by listeners, and more music than you can shake a glitterball at!

There's also a daily Pause For Thought and listeners on the line, as Amol entertains the nation with fun for the family!

Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:聽
Our youngest daughter has just started her degree. She鈥檚 at a lovely university by the coast in the South of England. She鈥檇 always wanted to study away from home, and had set her heart on a campus or coastal university. But the move is odd on so many levels! Our eldest two children stayed at home whilst doing their degrees, so this is our first experience of a child moving out. In addition, starting university in the era of covid is鈥 well鈥 it鈥檚 different! Like tens of thousands of students across the country 鈥 her course is being done online. In theory she could be doing her degree from home, and saving a small fortune in accommodation costs鈥β
But the university encouraged people to move to campus, and although she is in her room most of the time, thankfully she feels she is getting something of a university experience. She lives in student halls with five complete strangers, who she gets along with. She cooks for herself everyday. No instant noodles for our girl!聽
She rustles up full roast dinners, or a fresh curry and rice. She鈥檚 taken craft projects with her to pass the long hours she is in her room.聽 She walks to the beach regularly, and we get sent beautiful pictures of the sunset. There are challenges 鈥 navigating online lectures, and missing human contact is a struggle for her. She鈥檚 a real people person! But I am sure she鈥檒l be fine. She has the tools in place to cope. I am so happy for her, and by the powers of modern technology, I see her face every day even if it is just for a few minutes.聽
But I miss her. I miss the every day of her. I miss our morning hug. I miss the 鈥渃an I get you anything?鈥 question that she鈥檒l ask me as she pops her head round the door. I miss her covering me with a blanket if I fall asleep on the sofa. I miss her coming in to kiss us goodnight. I reckon, in life, it鈥檚 always the little things that are the important things. The grand gestures are nice, but life can鈥檛 contain too many of them. It鈥檚 the small things which matter. The Islamic scholar, mystic, and poet, Rumi, wrote: 鈥淧atience with small details makes perfect a work.鈥 And I think that鈥檚 true of life too.
