Titans Of The Baize: Wales' Snooker Obsession

Fifty years ago, Tredegar boy Ray Reardon won snooker's World Championship for the first time. To celebrate, comedian Mike Bubbins explores the Welsh love affair with the sport.

Fifty years ago, Tredegar boy Ray Reardon lifted snooker's World Championship trophy for the first time. He'd go on to be world champion no fewer than five more times in the 1970s, as Wales dominated the highest levels of the sport. Since that time, players like Terry Griffiths, Doug Mountjoy, Mark Williams and Matthew Stevens have reached the very pinnacle of the game - making snooker one of our nation's greatest sporting success stories.

Comedian Mike Bubbins sets out to investigate our nation's love affair with snooker, exploring the origins and social history of the men's and women's game in Wales - and trying to figure out why we're just so damn good at it. Featuring a brand new interview with the legendary Ray Reardon, as well as contributions from Dennis Taylor, Mark Williams, Terry Griffiths, Jamie Clarke and Welsh women's no.2 Sharon Lewis.

Sports historian Luke Harris, journalist and snooker aficionado Abi Davies and former World Championship Quarter-Finalist Dominic Dale fill in the social background - plus we revel in some of the sport's most famous moments from the archive: from 70s TV staple Pot Black, to THAT black-ball final of 1985...
