Noel Fitzpatrick, the Supervet, chats to Zoe about his latest book. How Animals Saved My Life. Noel鈥檚 book is the follow-up to his number 1 bestseller Listening to the Animals which was his story of becoming the Supervet. How Animals Saved My Life isn鈥檛 just biographical. It has stories and memories from Noel鈥檚 career as 鈥榯he Supervet鈥 and events before it, but it鈥檚 also a book in which he reflects on life and the importance of animals to us and the way we live and think.
Noel obtained his Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine from University College Dublin in 1990 and he has also been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Surrey for the advancement of animal health. He specialises in keyhole surgery to treat spinal disc disease, limb deformities, joint replacement and limb salvage.
In 2009, Noel became the first surgeon in the world to successfully apply a cutting edge amputation prosthesis to Oscar the cat who had lost two feet. In May 2015, he was awarded a Guinness World Record for this pioneering operation.

Pause For Thought
Zoe, we鈥檙e reaching the end of the year and I鈥檓 reaching the end of my tether, especially on the dating front which has been pretty dire for me this year, like it has for so many singles. I鈥檝e deleted and reinstalled apps like a yoyo, fed up of seeing gym selfies, puppy filters and non-commitment. I鈥檝e gone from swipe lefts - to hope - to heart-sinks, all the time wondering, when will I finally get my love story? Well I almost did before the rise of the planet of the apps, over 18 years ago when a man got down on one knee and held out an engagement ring. I was very young, na茂ve and romantic, but my bubble quickly burst when red flags emerged about my fianc茅, and it painfully dawned on me that he was not my happy ending. It was one of the lowest and darkest points of my life.聽
I didn鈥檛 know you could suffer a broken heart from not loving someone back. So many times, I鈥檝e wished I could rewind the clock, and not pick up his very first phone call. But the experience, painful as it was, made me pray even harder, drawing me closer to my Creator, and closer to knowing myself. Since then, I鈥檝e been more prepared for the salt of disappointments and learned the sweetness of survival. Moving through life, I keep stepping deeper into who I鈥檓 becoming. I heed the words of the American Muslim speaker and author, Yasmin Mogahed, when she says: 鈥淭o all those broken or hopeless, I have learned this: Be grateful for every single person who was part of your story. The ones that hurt you. The ones that helped you. The ones that came, and the ones that left. They all taught you. Don鈥檛 think for a moment that any of it was random.聽
There are no oversights with God. Only perfectly crafted chapters in each unique journey.鈥 Instead of feeling regret or wanting to turn back the clock, I鈥檒l choose to learn from all the people who鈥檝e come into my path. I鈥檒l embrace Life itself, like it鈥檚 the partner I鈥檝e always wanted. Maybe this could be the love story that never ends.
