Helen Worth and Sally Dynevor, AKA Coronation Street characters Gail Platt and Sally Webster, chat to Zoe about the 60th Anniversary of the hit ITV soap which cements it's place in television history as the world’s longest running drama serial. The show, a story of the everyday lives of ordinary folk, living in a northern town called Weatherfield, was created by a young scriptwriter called Tony Warren. It first screened live at 7pm on Friday 9th December 1960 and changed the face of British television forever. It has been captivating audiences and proving a ratings success ever since. More than 10,000 episodes later the Guinness World Record holding programme has seen 57 births, 146 deaths and 131 weddings alongside affairs, murders, secrets and lies, and not forgetting that unique blend of pathos and northern humour that makes the show just as popular today as it was all those years ago.

It’s The Why Workshop, and Zoe quizzes the QI Elves with more wonders and ponders, including your questions. If you have a question for the elves you can get in touch with Zoe, just email zoeball@bbc.co.uk

Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Matt Woodcock, Church of England Pioneer Minister and Mission Supporter in the Diocese of York:

Ìý

It’s been a sad and difficult time for my dad recently.

He’s been grieving the loss of his precious partner, Maggie, who died after a long illness.Ìý

Understandably, he’s not been himself - struggling to acclimatise to life without her.

We’ve seen less of his characteristic spark, passion and easy laughter.

Dad lost some of his appetite too - and not just because I cooked for him a few times.

I worried that things had got really bad when I discovered he’d lost interest in his beloved football team, York City.Ìý

It’s a club he’s supported unwaveringly for more than 60 years.

As a kid, I was always encouraged to share his love of the Minstermen - dragged to watch dire games against the likes of Aldershot Town on cold Tuesday nights.Ìý

‘Someone has to watch this rubbish, Matt,’Ìýdad would often joke.

But top of the league or bottom, following City gave him enormous joy and pleasure.Ìý

So his new-found lack of interest was a bit concerning.

But then something surprising and wonderful happened to dad.

One afternoon he got an unexpected knock at the door.

Standing there in a tracksuit - flanked by his coach - was York City manager and former Newcastle United and Everton favourite, Steve Watson.

Somehow he’d found out about dad’s bereavement and went round to offer his condolences.Ìý

Over a cuppa, Steve shared fascinating stories from his playing days.

Revealed his master plan for York City’s world domination - or at least a return to the football league.Ìý

That simple half hour of conversation has been transformative.

We’ve got our dad back.Ìý

It’s lifted his spirits.Ìý

Put a positive bounce into his step - and hope back onto his horizon.

I wrote to thank Steve for his kind-heartedness.

It reminded me of the great power in committing time and energy to simple acts of compassion and benevolence towards friends and strangers.

They lie at the heart of my Christian faith - yet can become so easily dismissed as inconsequential or neglected because I’m too busy.

Steve’s visit taught me that I won’t do anything more important with my day.

And that God delights in such heartfelt gestures.Ìý

They really can make all the difference.

My dad is testament to that, Zoe.

His passion for life has been restored.Ìý

And yes, for York City too.
