Pause or Thought
The old uninhabited rectory dining room smelled of boiled cabbage.听 I never understood how it smelled so strongly but my sister Helen and I had to go there for what we called school dinner where excessively boiled sludgy cabbage was served, in my memory at least, every day.听 That wasn鈥檛 the worst of it, as to get to our meal, we had to walk down the windy stony path from the old primary school building in Elstree village, through the ancient cemetery of St Nicolas Church in single file and in silence.
I was trapped,听either way,听caught between my fertile childish imagination and my appetite for an over boiled lunch.听听听
Now, many years later I have started to appreciate cemeteries which, in Jewish communities are often called 鈥榖eit shalom鈥, a house of peace. 听听听听
This week, I visited a tranquil, well-kept church graveyard in North London which has been vandalised three times in recent weeks.听 Its peace has been shattered along with 15 gravestones 鈥 some over 150 years old.听听
As I stood there with Julie the vicar, a group of primary school children were walking down the graveyard path, laughing and chatting, enjoying the warm spring day along with their teachers.听听Like so many other local people of all faiths and backgrounds, they had left spring flowers - yellow daffodils and pink and orange tulips and scattered them all over the broken stones, like rays of sunshine. 听
Rather than spreading hate and division, the vandals had done the exact opposite as messages of support, gifts, flowers and offers of help poured into the church from far and wide.听
Glancing at my watch and noting that it was lunchtime, I followed the pathway back to my car, out of habit in single file and in silence 鈥 just like my sister and I had all those years ago.听 Joyfully, there was no boiled cabbage at the other end, just a kosher bagel bakery, which to my still active imagination, smelled very simply like my childhood concept of heaven.听
