Why Do We Say "As the Crow Flies"?

Sean wonders if crows fly in straight lines and gets an explanation of the saying, "as the crow flies".

"There's an expression I want to ask about," says Sean. "Why do we say, how far is it from here to there 'as the crow flies'? Why do we say the crow? Do crows fly around in straight lines?"

"Before modern navigation systems," Paul says, "British vessels used to carry a cage of crows. And these birds, when they're let out, they fly straight to the nearest land, thus indicating the direction of the nearest land."

"Right," says Sean, sounding slightly bemused. "Thank you for the information! I don't know whether to believe that or not Paul. So you're on a ship, and you don't know where the land is, and you release a crow, and it's, 'Follow that crow!' OK. The more I read it... Paul, where did you get this information from?"

"But there has to be some sense in that idea about the crows," says Pawnbroker. "That must be why they call the platform on a ship the crow's nest!"

"Never mind that crow!" says Avril the gas girl. "Where did all my requests go? Did they fly away with the crow?"
