Manics in Cuba

Huw Stephens remembers the historic moment when Manic Street Preachers performed in Havana.

For decades, Western music was banned in Cuba. The country's leader Fidel Castro believed that songs from the US and UK were culturally subversive, so stopped them being played on the islands. Following improved diplomatic relations between Cuba and the US, the ban was lifted in 2001, and the first popular band to play Havana after the rules were relaxed were the Manic Street Preachers. Huw Stephens remembers this historic gig twenty years on with those who experienced the performance.
