Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

At the 93rd听Academy Awards this year the Original Music Score Award was won by composer Jon Batiste who wrote the music for the film听厂辞耻濒.听听The animated film tells the story of a jazz pianist who has a near-death experience and ends up stuck in the confused maze of a disturbing afterlife.听

This leads him to re-think his entire life and especially the effects of the many choices he made. The stark conclusion is that so far he has taken his life and his gifts for granted.听In accepting the Oscar, Batiste celebrated the moment by giving thanks for what he termed the 鈥12 notes鈥:听He told the massive TV audience that God gives everyone 12 notes. It鈥檚 the same 12 notes that Duke Ellington had; that Bach, the Beatles and Nina Simone had. He emphasised that every gift is special;听that every piece of beautiful music comes from the divine.

Powerful music continues to move the world;听every song ever written and every song yet to be written - whether it鈥檚 鈥淪weet Caroline鈥 or Beethoven鈥檚 Ninth Symphony -听comes to us from the same 12 notes. 鈥淚鈥檓 thankful to God for those 12 notes,鈥 Batiste said proudly.听He then offered us听a challenge. God not only gives us musical notes but gifts us with another unique selection of 鈥渘otes鈥 or talents. And with these we have to create the soundtrack to our lives.听 This 鈥渟cale鈥 of 12 notes includes attitudes like compassion, mercy, forgiveness, justice, empathy, loyalty, honesty and peace.听

Our task is to lift the lives of others through the melody of our own life; it鈥檚 the same for the saint and the sinner, scientist and labourer, grandparent and child, corporate executive and forgotten homeless person - it鈥檚 our privilege to string together the theme tune to our lives with those 12 notes.听

Personally, I think Mozart鈥檚 view that music is not in the notes but in the silence in between, describes my life perfectly. My attempt to be a better person is so disjointed that the music becomes discordant. However it鈥檚 never too late to strike the right note; to compose a new tune and 鈥渢o help the world to sing in perfect harmony.鈥澨
