Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Last weekend was a close friend’s wedding and like me she’s Punjabi Sikh which means five days of celebrations, ceremonies and prayers morning to evening.

Ìý

Sikh weddings tend to be large in numbers, often inviting even the most distant of acquaintances because Sikhs believe it’s a blessing to feed the community and will cook or cater endless amounts of food. Quite similar to Sikh temples that provide free food to anyone, from any background throughout the day. Due to restrictions my friend had to place limits on everything but still managed to pull off a fabulous Punjabi wedding. The first ceremony, known as the Rokha, requires parents of both the bride and groom to bless the union. Punjabi weddings are more like the joining of two families so parental consent means everything.Ìý

Ìý

At every ceremony, and there are around 16, guest will show up wearing the vibrant Punjabi outfits with traditional jewels ready to dance, eat good food and create lasting memories.

Ìý

One of the more romantic ceremonies is the mehndi. The bride is surrounded by female friends and family while intricate henna designs are painted on her hands and feet. Arranged marriages use to be the norm so to promote a bit of innocent foreplay the henna artist would hide the name of the groom within the design and on the wedding night the groom would scan his bride’s hands and feet searching for it.ÌýÌýÌý

Ìý

My favourite day is the wedding morning which takes place at the Sikh temple.Ìý

Ìý

As prayers are sung, the couple walk around the Holy Scripture 4 times, each round has a verse associated describing the various stages of marital love and the path towards divine love – a love with no opposite. I enjoyed performing kirtan that morning at the iconic Shepard’s Bush Gurdwara with its history of Maharaja’s and princesses. Due to lockdowns it’s been a long time since I have performed kirtan with an audience and it’s an entirely different feeling to be able to join together as one to rejoice and celebrate love.ÌýÌý
