Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

A photo flashed up as a memory on my mobile last week, one of those reminders you get telling you what happened eight and four years ago on this day. And more often than not, they make me cringe, as I ask myself, what was I wearing, what was I thinking, or why on earth did I do that.

Like the day I embarrassed myself bumping into the actor James Norton in an airport cafe, and gawping like a fool while we waited for our coffees at the bar, all I could muster was, 鈥業 love Granchester鈥. He looked at me, forced a smile, and put a half-hearted thumbs up. I wanted Terminal 1 to swallow me and my cabin luggage whole.听

But the memory I really wanted to forget was prompted by a photo of a friend taken just before we drifted apart. After a period of time that saw both of us bearing the loss of a parent, and doing some growing up over the years, we eventually came back to each other to rebuild our friendship. 听But I still didn鈥檛 want to face all the times we had missed out on being together.

There鈥檚 an old Turkish tale about a wise and witty Sufi Muslim teacher called Mulla Nasreddin, who, one day was riding his donkey the wrong way around. 鈥淢ulla!鈥 the people exclaimed, 鈥測ou are sitting on your donkey backwards!鈥 鈥淣o,鈥 he replied. 鈥淚t's not that I鈥檓 sitting on the donkey backwards, I'm just interested in where I鈥檝e been coming from more than where I am going, my friends.鈥

Hiding from the past can mean forgetting who I am and where I come from. As uncomfortable as it might be, as I purvey the bumps and regrets in my lifestory so far, I realise that every hurt I carried, every mistake I made, even every opportunity I missed, have brought me to where and who I am today.听

I reckon remembering what came before brings a perspective that has the power to heal what was broken. Sometimes it鈥檚 only with the gift of hindsight that I can begin to look forward.

So I鈥檒l embrace the embarrassing times, the heartbreaks and the headaches. As maybe riding a donkey backwards isn鈥檛 such a bad idea after all.
