Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

This time last week I was in Italy, leading a retreat (work…honest!) For some of us, it was our first time of meeting. And I guess like many first encounters, we began cautiously, sussing each other out, playing it a bit safe. But as someone said, strangers are really friends we just haven’t yet met. And that certainly turned out to be true for us. By the end of the week, we felt like old pals who didn’t want to part. There were the moments when we realised that we may not all share the same outlook on politics or whatever, but that was fine – there was banter and fun aplenty (helped along by some wonderful Italian ‘refreshment’), there were tears when some painful stories were shared, and lots of warm, soulful conversations.Ìý

I believe what unites us as human beings is far greater than anything that divides or distinguishes us. This was wonderfully underscored for me earlier in the summer when I jointly conducted an interfaith wedding with an imam – a stranger who soon became a friend. Rachel and Haroon, chose to get married in a community garden in a ceremony that entirely honoured their respective Christian and Muslim traditions, but celebrated a deeper unity. Once again, many of us hadn’t met previously, yet we enjoyed an unforgettable evening of love and laughter and tears of joy – demonstrating beyond doubt that a common humanity far outweighs differences of background, culture, or religion. That north London garden felt like the warmest, safest place on earth.

One person told me he’d wondered how it was going to work: bringing the two communities together and having a priest and an imam alongside each other. ‘It is the most inclusive event I’ve ever experienced’, he said, ‘and makes me more hopeful for our world.’ When I think about it, most of my best friends are people I met by complete chance. Some I wasn’t even sure I liked at the beginning. Some still hold quite different views and ideas to me. Yet none of that matters. Because now, I just don’t wish to imagine my world without them. And looking back, I’m just relieved we bothered to listen to each other – enough to transform perfect strangers into lifelong pals.Ìý
