The true story of Derry鈥檚 greatest conman. Bernard Gallagher (aka Willie John) became a national celebrity in the early 1900s, even though he was convicted more than 21 times for false pretences and theft.

In this half-hour documentary by Macha Media for 大象传媒 Gaeilge, D贸nall Mac Giolla Ch贸ill follows in the footsteps of Gallagher and investigates how one man managed to hoax the people of the north west of Ireland.

Willie John鈥檚 court appearances were sensational affairs, with large crowds often in attendance. As D贸nall wonders what might have driven him to act as he did, he reflects that the greed of the gullible was the key to the success of Willie John.
