Divine Office: Sext

Episode 5 of 8

The fifth of the Canonical Hours with the Tallis Scholars and Peter Phillips, the office of Sext.

The Office of Sext

Radio 3鈥檚 鈥淐apturing Twilight鈥 season continues with the fifth office of the Liturgy of the Hours, which is being broadcast throughout the day. The Tallis Scholars, conducted by Peter Phillips, began their journey with Matins, just as the clocks changed back to Greenwich Mean Time at 1am this morning. They sing settings of words and psalms associated with each of the eight services, also know as Divine Office, a monastic rule laid down in the 6th century by St Benedict; a daily ritual which remains familiar in monasteries and convents around the world today.

Traditionally at 12 noon, the office of Sext includes Latin chant, music by Hildegard of Bingen, and John Tavener's famous motet - Song for Athene.
