Holly Willoughby, Jessie Ware And Live Music From Gregory Porter

Holly Willoughby tells us all about her new book, Reflections, Jessie Ware chats Table Manners LIVE, and Gregory Porter performs his new single, live from Maida Vale studios.

It's another Friends Phone In Friday with Zoe Ball.

Holly Willoughby chats to Zoe about her new biography, Reflections: Life lessons on finding beauty - inside and out. In Reflections, she addresses body-image, burnout and control with candour, nuance and hard-won insight. In her words "letting go of the judgement and the negativity makes space for love and kindness". Holly is of course known for presenting This Morning and Dancing on Ice.

Jessie Ware is first and foremost an extremely talented and successful musician, most recently releasing her 2020 UK Top 5 Album, What's Your Pleasure? However, Jessie is now perhaps best known for the foodie podcast, Table Manners, which she co-hosts with her mum Lennie. Previous guests include Ed Sheeran, Nigella Lawson, Stanley Tucci, and Fearne Cotton. The podcast is in its 12th series and is heading out on tour! You can see Jessie and Lennie live - tickets are now on sale.

And finally, Gregory Porter is live from the 大象传媒's Maida Vale studios. He'll be performing his latest single 'Dry Bones', as well as a selection of tracks from his back-catalogue. The LA-born musician is known for his warm baritone vocals, blending jazz, soul, and gospel. He rose to acclaim in 2010 with his Grammy-nominated debut, Water, and his two most recent albums - Nat King Cole & Me and All Rise, both reached the UK Album Top 5.

Along with Adam Porter on news, Richie Anderson on travel and Mike Williams on sport, Zoe and the team have the best start to your morning. With celeb guests, quizzes, headlines, tunes chosen by listeners and more music than you can shake a glitterball at!

There's also a Pause For Thought from Paul Kerensa and listeners on the line as Zoe entertains the nation with fun for the family!

Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Happy Bonfire Night 鈥 if that鈥檚 a thing you say. Bring on the fireworks, and trying to write our full names with sparklers in the air (easier for you, Zoe Ball 鈥 nice short name). Locally though, we had fireworks听last听night too. No, not Guy Fawkes鈥 Eve... no 鈥榬emember remember the听fourth听of November鈥. No 鈥 the festival of Diwali. But who am I, as a Christian, to talk about Diwali? Well, I鈥檓 parent to an 8-year-old who鈥檚 been delightfully chatting with her friends about it.

My daughter told me: 鈥淚鈥檓 a Christian, she鈥檚 a Hindu, so we鈥檝e been asking each other in the playground about Diwali and Christmas.鈥 Ah my interfaith heart is full! It鈥檚 like Religious Education has spilled out of the classroom and into the playground. The how, when, what and why of their religious celebrations, all covered over break-time between two curious eight-year-olds, from Jesus鈥 birth to the festival of lights. This playground discussion was a one-off 鈥 most days it鈥檚 the climbing-frame, not an interfaith forum. But I loved that they were asking questions. Listening more than talking. Religious Education is optional in our schools 鈥 in the past we鈥檝e had regular school reminders, that we can withdraw our kids at any time from RE. Some do, and sit in a separate classroom, out of earshot of the curriculum,听not听learning what their neighbours believe, how they live. Personally, I wonder if that鈥檚 a missed opportunity.

Knowledge learned in RE means we鈥檒l understand our friends better, and I think the skills learned go far beyond the classroom 鈥 into listening better, especially ifwe disagree. From Pause for Thought to pub to politics, perhaps it鈥檚 all like my daughter鈥檚 playground 鈥 we鈥檙e all just big kids, meeting up at break-time, wondering whether to have a chat, or show off on the climbing-frame. My daughter told me that Diwali, and Christmas, are festivals of good over evil, light over darkness, and Diwali particularly celebrates knowledge over ignorance. I appreciate anew that that can start young. So from Guildford to Glasgow, I wish all a Happy Diwali, a bonnie Bonfire Night, Merry Fifty Sleeps Till Christmas. Whatever you鈥檙e celebrating, I鈥檓 celebrating difference but also that common ground. As the ground of our local common hosts fireworks 鈥 we鈥檒l step back, look up, and enjoy our different viewpoints, all under one sky.
