Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

This week I moved home from Co Down to Enniskillen in Co Fermanagh. A priest is frequently asked to move on to work in another place. You go where the Spirit leads; you give it everything and then move on again.

The move back to Enniskillen is I reckon the fifteenth time I have packed up my belongings to start another chapter in another place. Packing up is hard; unpacking and settling down is harder still. I鈥檓 hoping this is the last time I have to move. Friends helped me move my boxes of books and CDs. I told them: 鈥楩or the next move I鈥檒l be inside the box 鈥 on the way to graveyard.鈥 聽

Moving, to be fair, can bring some rewards.

Changing home makes me realise that no earthly home is permanent. I learn to let go of what doesn鈥檛 matter. Saint Augustine, a millennium and a half ago, prayed: 鈥You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.鈥

Moving home this time I took a conscious decision to leave my failures behind me. Life gets complicated; it overwhelms us; it鈥檚 hard to handle; life can be cruel; not everything works out; so it鈥檚 time to recognise that it is the 鈥crushed grapes which produce delicious wine.鈥

Deep within we humans is an irresistible pull to what is negative. If I don鈥檛 transform that negativity I鈥檒l transmit it to others. It鈥檚 like worry; worry is a virus of the mind. The only antibiotic is to be positive.

Peace comes when I step off the treadmill of anxiety and allow the healing to happen. If I鈥檓 the architect of my own unhappiness, then I can become the architect of a more productive life. Change your vision and you鈥檒l change your attitude. Change your attitude and you鈥檒l change your life.

Unpacking my bags gave me the opportunity to discard the baggage which is weighing me down; when I can鈥檛 change what is dragging me down I need to change how I manage it.聽

In short this move is the perfect opportunity to clean out the past, pack up the present, and prepare myself for a better future.
