Jamie looks back at the legacy of pioneering afrobeat drummer Tony Allen, with words from Dele Sosimi and Cassie Kinoshi plus an archive interview with the man himself.
Jamie looks back at the legacy of pioneering afrobeat drummer Tony Allen, ahead of a big tribute concert at this year鈥檚 EFG London Jazz Festival.
From his work defining afrobeat with Fela Kuti in the 60s and 70s, to leading his own bands for over 40 years, Tony Allen was long revered for his huge impact on modern music. He never stopped experimenting鈦犫仩鈥攁s shown by his extensive collaborations with everyone from fellow West African legends like Manu Dibango, to his long association with Damon Albarn and his record with techno producer Blake Mills. He played up until the very end, releasing a new album just a month before his passing in April 2020, aged 79.
Jamie is joined by a pair of special guests鈥攕axophonist and composer Cassie Kinoshi, and keyboardist, vocalist and 鈥榓frobeat ambassador鈥 Dele Sosimi鈥攚ho give their memories of Tony Allen and pick their favourite pieces.
Tony appeared on the show a number of times down the years, so Jamie also digs into the archives to find an interview from 2015 and an exclusive session track from 2017 by the man himself.
