Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

As we approach the of the year, I guess it鈥檚 normal to reflect on 2021, and what聽the days of 2022 may bring.

It strikes me that life is full of firsts and lasts 鈥 and sometimes we don鈥檛 even recognise the importance of an event in the moment:聽 I don鈥檛 remember the last time my now grown-up daughter fell asleep on my lap and I carried her upstairs and tucked her into bed. I didn鈥檛 note the last time I read her to sleep with her favourite book.聽

If I had realised聽that I would never know those moments again, would I have been more attentive?

If each moment聽was infused聽with the power of firsts and lasts, would聽our lives be richer?

If the scarcity of our time on Earth聽was truly understood, how would we live differently?

I grew up with my Mum quoting the quip: 鈥淟ive every day as if it will be your last. One day you鈥檒l be right.鈥澛

It鈥檚 accurate but is it possible? If a day was my last day on earth I wouldn鈥檛 be doing the washing up, but on a day to day basis that needs to be done.

Imbuing our time with significance is important, but there is also a certain practicality needed.聽

How do balance that? To recognise the importance and indeed scarcity of every moment?

In reality, every second of our lives is the first time we have lived聽that聽second, as well as the聽last聽time we have lived that second. We live in an ever-present existence of firsts and lasts. We miss them before we even realise they are there.聽

So perhaps聽the point is striving to be present聽in that exact moment.聽Different religious traditions reflect on it鈥 mindfulness, consciousness, awareness鈥 all a calling to聽live truly聽in the moment, to be aware of The Presence.

The Bible describes聽God聽as the聽Alpha and the Omega 鈥 the first and the last.聽The Qur鈥檃n聽speaks of God聽as聽our Source and聽our聽End聽鈥 our first and our last.

So as聽we live these last days of聽2021 and聽look ahead to what 2022 begins, I shall make no resolutions, other than聽to聽strive to聽live in the present of every single聽moment.
