Forestry, an Antarctic Expedition and Tarlair Pavilion

Mark Stephen and Euan McIlwraith with stories from the great outdoors.

Dan Holland finds out about peatland restoration happening on part of the Assynt Foundation estate from ecologist Chris York.

How do you explore the outdoors if you are visually impaired? Producer Phil Sime鈥檚 guide dog sadly passed away last year so he takes a lesson on how to use a white cane in order to give him more independence.

Storm Arwen at the end of November last year devastated large areas of forestry, particularly in the North East of Scotland. Mark heads to one area that was damaged and hears how landowners and forestry managers are working together to manage the recovery operation of large amounts of timber.

Euan visits Tarlair outdoor pool near Macduff where the art-deco pavilion has recently been awarded funding to be restored.

While we were at Moniack Mhor, Scotland鈥檚 Creative Writing Centre, we spoke to lecturer Dr Heather Clyne about Gaelic place names and their significance. Mark and Euan hear about some of the unique names in the area and their origins.

Did Storm Arwen impact birdlife in the North East? Mark meets Ian Broadbent, local recorder for the North East Bird Report to find out what affect extreme weather can have on birds.

To commemorate the centenary of explorer Ernest Shackleton's death, historian Dan Snow is taking part in an Antarctic expedition, Endurance 2022, to try to find the Endurance shipwreck. We chat live to Dan to find out more about the trip and the significance of Shackleton.

And Euan has the first mystery bird of 2022. Can you identify it from its call?
