Pause For Thought
Well Zoe, we might be singing from the same hymn-sheet when it comes to my bone of contention right now 鈥 given the time that you get up to host this show. I鈥檓 talking about sleep 鈥 or really, my lack of it! Because ever since my son Teddy was born 8 months ago, I鈥檝e been waking not once, twice or even thrice a night but four or five times, to feed and cuddle this hungry babe back to the land of nod. I know broken sleep is part of what you sign up for when having kids. A friend recently sent me a listicle of 鈥榯hings about parenting that are much harder than expected鈥 鈥 and right up there at no.2 was 鈥榮leep deprivation鈥.听
听
So, what with the yawning and sapped energy persisting, we decided to try a bit of tough love. Off my husband went to his parents, Teddy in tow. The aim was to give me a night鈥檚 sleep and to get him to take a bottle, but the outcome was actually a powerful learning. Because recently I鈥檝e found myself almost wishing Teds would catch-up with his big sister. But as soon as we embarked on our first overnight separation and I got a taste of life post-the baby phase, I was struck by how fiercely I wanted it back. I looked around at the bouncer, Moses basket, changing-station 鈥 clobber I often wish didn鈥檛 occupy such space 鈥 and found myself tearing up. It was a stark reminder to savour this precious, if exhausting and messy, time.听
听
My Dad told me recently that when they were expecting me, they read a book about the spiritual benefits of parenting - intrigued, I鈥檝e started reading it. I love how the author Margaret Hebblethwaite reflects so thoughtfully yet alternatively on signs of childish inhabitation; saying that one of the ways a house actually becomes a home is by the 鈥渃reative co-ordination between the parents who choose it鈥 and tidy it鈥 and the children who mess it鈥 scrawl on it and yet at the same time have called it into being.鈥 That 鈥渟pace in our togetherness鈥 (as Kahlil Gibran would call it) for Teddy and I certainly woke me up to the unique beauty of this life chapter, reframing even the excess of plastic and scarcity of sleep as one ginormous blessing.听
