Joanna is an actress and television presenter, best known for playing Patsy in the fantastically funny 'Absolutely Fabulous' and for starring in the Hollywood blockbuster 'The Wolf of Wall Street'.

Pause For Thought

Yes Zoe there are so many old Jewish jokes, like, what is the difference between a pit bull terrier and a Jewish mother聽聽鈥� eventually the pit bull lets go. This week, reluctantly, and reeeally slowly, I鈥檝e had to let go as my oldest, Louis, moved out into his new flat. Like many other parental homes, ours is jam packed with our children鈥檚 discarded, unwanted, uncategorised shmutz, the Yiddish for stuff.聽聽We currently have two sofas abandoned from Louis鈥� last flat, stuffed into the living room, along with a bathroom rack blocking the view of the TV and tatty boxes, filled with unchuckable school projects on The Romans and The life cycle of a tree, making getting to my desk a daily obstacle course.聽聽

Our adult offspring (I can鈥檛 call them children) are moving on, leaving our house filled with junk, memories and聽聽a very loud silence.聽聽聽Whilst mums 鈥� and dads- like me celebrate the achievements of their children in being able to move forwards, and whilst we revel in reacquiring the remote control, the phrase empty nest is a bit of a give away. Our dogs, Basel and Shuli, used to sharing Louis鈥� bed, are wondering dejectedly round the house, the doorbell bringing his take-aways has stopped ringing, and his friends have stopped visiting.聽聽

An American Jewish commentator, Banji Ganchrow, described an empty nest as 鈥渁 place where no one comes home ever, Noone ever comes looking for a tie or a pair of pants they left to have a button put on, there are no requests for meatballs, potato kugel or chocolate chip cookies.聽聽It is quiet all of the time.鈥� As Dan and I sat down after our favourite dinner last night, clearing the obstructed site line to watch a brand new and long awaited TV series, with both dogs heaped onto my lap, I kept my phone close by, just in case. After all, I told myself, the fridge heaving with tempting leftovers, it won鈥檛 be quiet all of the time.聽
