Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Third most stressful thing after death and divorce? I thought it was overcooked pasta, but no it鈥檚 moving house and I am beginning to understand why. In a couple of weeks I will be leaving the Vicarage where I have lived for eleven years, and retiring to a little cottage on the south coast, to the sound of lambs bleating in the fields, the distant crash of sea on shingle, the soft whine of plug-in hybrid SUVs charging. That鈥檚 all lovely, but I鈥檓 downsizing, so not only do I have to I figure out what-fits-where in the new place, I also have to figure out what to do with the stuff that won鈥檛. Some is easy: superfluous wardrobes, redundant lawnmower, a walk in sun-bed (don鈥檛 ask) have all found new homes.听

Some is more difficult: what do I do with theological tomes, dictionaries of New Testament Greek, the Canons of the Church of England, the tools of my trade when I鈥檓 no longer trading? A removal man once told me his worst customers were parsons on account of the tonnage of books that go with them. No room for mine in the new place, so I hope they will end up in the hands of readers who need them, or maybe like the 2.5m books pulped and repurposed for surfacing the M6 Toll road? Harder than that though, is the life-cargo I have accumulated over sixty years of existence. The childhood toys, my adolescent vinyl, the first furniture from my first flat, the cast iron kitchenware of middle age, marital swag. What do I do with that?

I was at my mother鈥檚 a while ago up in the attic going through stuff for a clear out and found an envelope containing my milk teeth. 鈥淲hat do you want me to do with these, mum?鈥 I asked. After a pause she said, 鈥渃huck them鈥. Chuck them; the junk so carefully accumulated, and the sentimental stuff we hoard like treasure until we learn how much of living is letting go. A week today the church will mark the most extraordinary act of letting go, when Jesus gave up his own life so that the rest of us could truly live. A happy Easter, when it comes, and if anyone鈥檚 looking for a wonky hostess trolley, slightly dog soiled, that hasn鈥檛 worked since the Silver Jubilee鈥 any reasonable offer considered.听
