Tunes, chat and celebrating Rainbow and Emmerdale at 50

Mark and Stuart present a Smörgåsbord of great music and chat, and mark the 50th anniversary of iconic TV series Rainbow and Emmerdale with some tenuously related tracks.

Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie present a feast of great music and chat for weekend breakfast.

Today, they celebrate the 50th anniversary of iconic TV series’ Rainbow and Emmerdale with related tunes and chat.

Children’s TV series Rainbow first aired on 16th October 1972 and ran for 27 series until 1997. Initially presented by David Cook, best-known host Geoffrey Hayes took over in 1974. The show gained cult-like status as Zippy, Bungle, George and their fellow puppet pals mesmerised generations with their zany and unique personalities.

On the same day, Emmerdale was broadcast for the first time. Known as Emmerdale Farm until the late 80’s, the long-running soap continues to be one of the most popular television programmes in the country, following the ups and downs of the lives of the families in the fictional Yorkshire village.

Also with a host of quality radio items including 'The Chain' - our world-famous list of over 8000 interconnected songs - and ‘Tea Time Theme Time’, where we ask you to guess the link between three top tunes.

Plus a finely balanced blend of new and old music, setting you up for a Sunday.
