The 大象传媒 Philharmonic are joined by conductor Elena Schwarz to continue its autumn season featuring final works. Stravinsky's Symphony in three movements is the last of four called a "symphony", even though he lived another 25 years after composing it. First performed in America in 1946 he initially said there was no programme behind it, but later in life he suggested he'd been influenced by filmed footage of the Second World War. Brahms's Double Concerto was his last orchestral piece; inspired partly by his desire to make amends to his friend, violinist Joseph Joachim after siding with Joachim's wife during divorce proceedings. Although not received well at its premiere in 1887 (comments from friends he trusted led Brahms not to write a second he had planned) the conversation between solo instruments gives the piece warmth and energy. Beethoven's Sixth Symphony ends the concert and there is no reticence about a programme here; Beethoven himself named it "Pastoral" and we join him as he relaxes into life in the countryside.
