Yma o Hyd – The Power of Football
The song, with it's rousing catchy chorus line of "still standing", has become a sign of unity for those on the terraces who speak Welsh and those who don't. In the past the song was seen as a nationalist anthem sung by those on picket-lines or language activists who want independence for Wales from the UK.
Today, the song has gone on a journey – a transition across Wales and the world bringing a renewed focus to football with a renewed interest in the Welsh language and culture.
This has not happened by accident but as a result of a well thought out strategy by the Football Association of Wales, the FAW. The Head of Public Relations at the FAW, Ian Gwyn Hughes, had a vision for the Welsh culture and language which is now being borne out in the present day – on and off the pitch.
Dafydd Iwan, the song's author, is a former President of Plaid Cymru and wrote the song when he felt Wales was at a low-point in 1982 during Prime Minister Thatcher's years and he wanted to proclaim that despite everyone and everything done to Wales – the country is "still standing" and will be independent again.
