Names and Places
Gary West chats to Lorne MacDougall about an ambitious piping event at Celtic Connections.
Gary West takes a closer look at the main pipe band concert coming up at Celtic Connections in early February in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. Musical director, Lorne MacDougall joins him in the studio to provide a glimpse of the process of re-interpreting a seminal album from over three decades ago, ‘Names and Places’, by Eclipse First and the Vale of the Atholl. One of the first projects to be composed specifically for folk group and pipe band, Lorne has put together a stellar line up of musicians including the all-star piping group, Tryst, and the National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland, as well as a handful of players who performed on the original recording. Also on tonight’s menu there are sets from Ian Duncan, Alasdair Gillies, the Shotts and Dkyehead Caledonia Pipe Band, and a taste of a new release from the students at the National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music based at Plockton High School.
