Bird flu

Bird flu
Bird flu has had a dramatic impact on the population of wild birds in Scotland since the summer of 2022. Present every year to some extent, the current strain of the disease has been particularly virulent, with many species of birds such as gannets and gulls having been decimated. Where there might once have been huge colonies of seabirds in places such as on the Bass Rock in East Lothian, there are now very few to be seen, and throughout the past few months people have reported countless dead birds being washed up on Scotland's beaches.

Bird flu has also had a devastating impact on those who keep poultry, with some farms having to destroy thousands of birds to prevents the disease from further spreading. The financial impact this has had on farmers has been difficult to deal with, although compensation is available to those who have to cull in large numbers.

Mental health issues in the Highlands

Mental health issues in the Highlands
People in the Highlands are more susceptible to mental health issues than in other areas of the UK. This is especially true for men, with evidence of this in the high proportion of suicides recorded in the area. Now, some community groups and organisations such as those connected to shinty, are taking it upon themselves to offer support and encouragement to men to open up about their feelings and talk about their mental health. The Camanachd Association has begun to offer counselling sessions to anyone connected to the sport and Lovat has for several years offered a chaplaincy service for players and support staff.
