Annilese Miksimmon, MaryAnne Stevens and Karim Kamar

With Sarah Walker, director Annilese Miksimmon reimagines an operatic Korngold, and curator MaryAnne Stevens and pianist Karim Kamar paint the music of modernity in art.

Korngold composed his most famous opera at only 23 years old. Filled with haunting visions, true love and darkness, Die tote Stadt (The Dead City) received a double premiere in 1920 in both Hamburg and Cologne. Today, the English National Opera presents a new production of Korngold's classic, conducted by Kirill Karabits and directed by Annilese Miksimmon, who is Sarah Walker's guest tonight.

After the Impressionist masters and before the outbreak of the first world conflict in 1914, how did art enter modernity? This is the question at the core of a new exhibition at the National Gallery in London, After Impressionism: Inventing Modern Art. Art historian and curator MaryAnne Stevens is our guide, accompanied by pianist and composer Karim Kamar, who will perform live some pieces that give a musical echo to these visual modern masterworks.
