Sixty-three years ago鈥擫inlin, then five years old, is abandoned on Elbaph, the island of Giants, by her parents after she was banned from her own country. She finds a home in the Sheep鈥檚 House, an orphanage for problem children run by Mother Carmel. Mother Carmel is the 鈥渉oly mother鈥� that stopped the execution of Giant pirates by the Marines and dreamed of a world where all races live together equally and peacefully. Linlin feels comfortable on Elbaph where the people are as big as she is and comes to love the kind Mother Carmel. After ten months on Elbaph, Linlin experiences her first semla, a sweet roll eaten before the 12-day fasting period preceding the Winter Solstice Festival. Linlin is overjoyed by the delicious treat and has to be stopped by the adults before she eats up everybody else鈥檚 portion. She endures her hunger for the first six days of fasting, but on the seventh day, her craving for semla drives her out of her mind. She destroys the Giants鈥� village and incurs the wrath of their hero, Jorl, who calls her the god of disaster disguised as a child.
