Episode 1 of 30

Nigel Havers presides as five sellers aim to get the best price for their items, including a mannequin, a pair of teddies, a set of magic tricks, football pinball and a phonograph.

Nigel Havers welcomes sellers of collectibles and curiosities to the Bidding Room's home in Edinburgh, where they ply their wares to five dealers.

Before facing the discerning dealers, each eager seller meets Nigel and auctioneer Simon Bower to learn the unique characteristics and history of their pieces, plus that all important valuation, so that when they enter the room, they’re armed with all the information they need to try and haggle the best possible price from the dealers.

While the dealers have no idea what may come through the doors, they do know what they like and their market, so persuading them to part with their hard-earned cash isn't easy. It's down to the sellers to convince as many of them as possible to take a punt on their piece. If all goes to plan, they'll spark a bidding war and see the final price tag rise.

But the dealers shouldn’t sit too comfortably. If the offer isn’t right or not high enough to match Simon’s expert valuation, the item’s owner may choose not to part with it.

First through the doors is Hamish. He's ready to say goodbye to his old friend Edward, an antique mannequin that’s been with him for many years. Simon is surprised by the condition of centurian Edward – he's looking good for his age. But will the mannequin take any of the dealers' fancy – and will they offer enough to rehome him?

Next in is a familiar face, Gloria. She’s come twice before, but this time she’s brought back-up in the form of two teddies. She’s targeting cuddly toy enthusiast Adi with hopes of raising money for charity – but could any of the dealers snatch the cuddly pair from under the room’s most prolific teddy buyer?

Third into Edinburgh HQ is magician Will, who’s hoping his large collection of retro magic tricks will mystify the dealers and that they’ll conjure up some big bids.

It’s Lauren next, with a retro football game she rescued from a bin. Now she’s hoping to score big with it in the room.

And finally, Toni has an item that she knows very little about, despite it living in a cupboard in her house for nearly 30 years. A vintage phonograph with a collection of musical cylinders should appeal to 1940s fanatic Jacqui, but will her or any of the other dealers’ bids be music to Toni’s ears?

The dealers are Ian, Jacqui, Viki, Adi, Jo and James.
