Episode 6
With a crumbling outbuilding and an overgrown vine out of control, Amanda and Alan raise the curtain on their biggest challenge yet as they take on the courtyard.
Amanda and Alan raise the curtain on their biggest challenge yet, the courtyard. With a crumbling outbuilding and an overgrown vine out of control, Alan can’t see the wood for the trees, but Amanda’s determined to save the vigorous climber and has an idea to transform the space into a romantic movie set. Alan, however, is unconvinced by his friend’s vision!
After a tiring job clearing decades of crowded weeds, the best pals meet up with tour guide and friend Bernado at the spectacular gardens of the Alhambra Palace to learn what plants thrive in the Spanish sun. Inspired to encapsulate a garden full of flora that will overwhelm the senses, Amanda and Alan are set on having an orange tree of their own and visit Gospa Orchard on the outskirts of Seville for an education in the art of fruit picking. It’s not long before the pals don fetching outfits to catch the oranges, which Amanda remarks gives her a booty like the Kardashians!
Back at the courtyard, Alan discovers that Amanda’s much-loved overgrown vine is in danger of pulling the outbuilding down, so he bluntly tells his friend that it has to go – for once Alan gets to make the final decision. But the vine is the least of his worries once Scott ropes him in to his most physically demanding job to date – building a balcony to help transform the ruinous outbuilding into a cool roof terrace.
Elsewhere in the village, Amanda gets blown away by local builder Rafa’s mosaic-filled cave house and ropes him in to help design a masterpiece of her own. Meanwhile, Alan scouts out some flamenco musicians in Granada to entertain them at the final courtyard party, but his rhythm is put to the test with a crash course in clapping, which in the heat of the day has him sweating under the collar!
To create their dream courtyard, the duo come together to help Scott build bespoke banquette seating, but Alan meets his match when he tries to self-teach himself how to operate the cement mixer, with disastrous results. After all the dust and heavy lifting, the friends down tools. Amanda decides to glam up and channel her Norma Desmond look as they visit the extraordinary Gorafe Desert for one of the best sunsets in Spain, share a glass of bubbly and reflect on their place in the world.
