Sherlock Holmes
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, born 150 years ago was the creator of cult detective Sherlock Holmes, famously depicted all over the world in a deerstalker hat and tweeds and clutching a magnifying glass. The Strand tracked down his sidekick Dr Watson, who shared his lodgings at 221b Baker Street in London and asked him to investigate the curious case of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's success and Sherlock Holmes' enduring popularity.

The Strand talks to the award winning poet Rita Dove about her latest book Sonata Mulattica, which looks at the story behind the dedication of Beethoven's notoriously difficult Kreutzer Sonata and how this affected the life of the violinist George Bridgetower.
