The canopy world is a place of extremes, with hot sun, drying winds and fiercely heavy storms. The seasons are more marked here than in the rest of the rainforest. When the rains are due, new growth is produced. Young leaves lack protective poisons, so trees produce far more than they need to satisfy the monkeys and ensure something survives for the tree.
