Summer of plenty
Arctic foxes have a wide diet, feeding on dead animals, eggs, nestlings, insects and berries. But in the years when the foxes' diet is reliant on lemmings, the number of cubs seems directly related to the number of rodents the parents can catch. This family has a litter of eight cubs, so obviously this year the number of lemmings in this part of East Greenland has been exceptionally high. Competiton between the cubs is fierce for each lemming brought in by their mother. All this rough and tumble helps to hone the skills they will need as they develop and become independent in this land of extremes. It won't be long before this time of learning and plenty for the cubs will change into a season of independence and hardship.
