Wild delight

To see a dormouse in the wild is a very rare treat. Sometimes they can be seen stuffing themselves with blackberries in preparation for the winter hibernation. These little mammals contain almost all the attributes we find endearing: twitchiest whiskers, little pink nose, dark eyes. They even eat hazelnuts in a very particularly cute way, leaving shells with a prefectly round signature hole as a clue to where they've been. Just like the hedgehog, it will help out in the garden too, if caterpillars are driving you crazy eating all your plants, a dormouse will happily tuck in to the problem. It seems a shame that such a delightful creature spends so much of its time in the dark and unseen by most, but there's even something rather sweet about that. These are the number one favourites in Bill Oddie's wild delights countdown.
