Towards the end of late October the caribou females come into heat, and aggression develops in the herd between the males. Fights between them sometimes end in death or injury, but usually the weaker bull will be chased away. During the turmoil of the rut, the rest of the herd will continue feeding in preparation for the winter. The rut is virtually over in five days and the caribou continue their long migrations towards the shelter of the thicker forests.
