Synchronised caribou calving
Around half of all the female caribou will give birth on the same day, and pretty much all of them will deliver within the week. It’s all synchronised to minimise the chance of a predator getting your calf because there are so many around. As you might expect with caribou, the calves are up and running - well tottering - within a couple of hours of being born. Once she's steadied up – she’ll hardly stop moving for the rest of her life. Pretty soon they find their feet. When they’re just one day old a caribou calf can easily outrun a human!
