Caribou calving

After a 10 week trek the first caribou cows reach the remote calving grounds of northern Canada. They are joined by flocks of snow geese arriving from the distant south, and also here to breed. As the geese return to the same spot year after year, so too do the caribou herds, which each have their own traditional calving area. As the caribou arrive, they spread out, giving birth to their young in sheltered, secluded spots. A strong bond between mother and calf quickly develops, for even though they can walk with hours of being born, a calf separated from its mother will be very vulnerable to predators.
