In the bleak years after the Second World War, with many parts of the country were still dominated by smokestacks and factories of the industrial revolution, a great effort was put into making work feel like a shared endeavour and instill in British workers the genuine optimism that by pulling together they could make the country prosperous once more, lured by the promise of full employment and the security offered by nationalised industries.
