A report addressing failures in the care of elderly patients in England says hospital and care home staff should be recruited on the basis of their compassion, as well as other skills.

The Commission on Dignity in Care also calls for a ban on patronising language such as "old dear" and "bed-blocker".

The review follows a series of critical reports which highlighted shocking and persistent failures in the care of the elderly. The recruitment of staff is seen as key to making improvements.
